What happened
In Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, buses keep halting at unscheduled spots, including a stop city police scrapped in 2009.
Why it matters
Commuters get easier boarding, but pedestrians stay pushed onto the carriageway and no driver has faced action.
Remember this
The 2009 stop move never reached the drivers.
More context & who is affected
In Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, city and private buses keep halting off-schedule, including at a stop city police scrapped back in 2009.
No driver has been booked for those halts, even after a speeding private bus killed a 71-year-old pharmacist and his 61-year-old wife in July.
Police told bus owners in July that offenders would be booked and vehicles seized, but the pattern does not appear to have changed.

Why the stop disappeared in 2009
When the city revised scheduled halts in 2009, police created a new one under the newly built Vannarpet flyover and scrapped the older textile-shop stop about 150 metres away, where the road was narrow, a temple sat on the platform and encroachments forced pedestrians onto the carriageway.
Commuters
Passengers stepping out at narrow, encroached off-schedule stops stay exposed to moving traffic, the same hazard behind the July fatality.
Commuters Β· General Public
Off-schedule halts at the Samathanapuram turning and other spots cause snarls and occasional altercations among commuters.
General Public
With zero bookings after a public warning, the notice to bus owners reads as unenforced, weakening trust in local traffic rules.

City and private buses in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai routinely halt at unscheduled stops, including at a textile-shop site scrapped in 2009.
In 2009 city police scrapped that stop over a narrow road, a temple on the platform and encroachments that pushed pedestrians onto the carriageway.
No bus driver has been booked by city police for those halts, even though the off-schedule stops cause traffic snarls.
On 13 July 2026 a speeding private bus rammed a two-wheeler at Vannarapettai, killing a 71-year-old pharmacist and his 61-year-old wife; the 24-year-old driver was arrested.
