More context & who is affected

India's largest interbank transfer systems now run from a new base. On 25 October, PM Narendra Modi opened the RBI's Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The data centre will host RTGS and NEFT, the systems that move money between banks.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the central bank is focusing on new technology, sturdier digital infrastructure and cyber defence. The training institute is meant to build skills in cybersecurity, AI and other emerging fields. PM Modi cautioned that modern conflicts strike economies through cyber attacks, so India's financial network must stay protected.

For a typical customer nothing changes today: no fee, rate or new service was announced. What shifts is where the payment rail lives — a second, geographically separate base, which the RBI says lowers the risk of disruption. The evidence does not prove any change in transfer speed, outages or jobs.

Background

The facilities open as Odisha pairs its mineral-based industries with semiconductors, electronics and data centres, a shift PM Modi called 'from mines to microchips'. The RBI says the moves aim to strengthen the resilience of digital financial infrastructure.
