GPT-6.1 Terra lands at half the price for code automation

What happened

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra in its API and ChatGPT Work and Codex on October 26, 2026, at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.

Why it matters

Developers and small teams on paid API access pay about half of the last Terra model per call, making automation of routine, repetitive work cheaper.

Remember this

GPT-6.1 Terra is roughly half the API price of GPT-5.6 Terra with far fewer coding errors.

Who can use it

The model is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and to developers through the API. It is not included in the free ChatGPT tier.

More context & who is affected

OpenAI's newest mid-range model, GPT-6.1 Terra, is now live in its developer API and inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. Every million input tokens carries a one-dollar price and each million output tokens five dollars, about half what GPT-5.6 Terra charged, trimming the cost of repeating scripted jobs.

In OpenAI's own testing, the model finished 50.3% of command-line coding tasks on Terminal-Bench 4.0, while GPT-5.6 Terra managed 21.5%. On a benchmark built around error-inducing prompts, the low-effort error rate slid from 53.6% to 16.7%.

Indian developers who pay for API access mainly gain cheaper automation of everyday chores such as reading invoices and entering those figures into accounting software. The free ChatGPT tier excludes the model, and OpenAI has not released India-specific pricing.

Developers

API costs for GPT-6.1 Terra are about half of GPT-5.6 Terra, so developers running high-volume automation pay less per call.

Developers

Lower error rates and faster completion make AI assistants more reliable for repetitive command-line and data-entry tasks.

General Public

Free ChatGPT users do not get the model; it is for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers and API developers.
