Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi on 17 September 2026, pitching India as a trusted global semiconductor manufacturing destination as supply chains face geopolitical weaponisation. 'When such a country succeeds in a critical industry, it strengthens the supply chain of the entire world. And today, when supply chains are being weaponised, its importance becomes much greater,' Modi said.
The event delivered major investment commitments: Applied Materials announced its India Vision 2035 with $5 billion over the next decade, including a 140-acre advanced semiconductor research park with clean-room capabilities. Lam Research committed ₹10,000 crore for India's first silicon component manufacturing facility, while Tata Electronics detailed its ₹91,526 crore Gujarat fab in partnership with Taiwan's PSMC, targeting 50,000 wafer starts per month alongside a ₹27,120 crore packaging facility in Assam.
Modi highlighted that 70,000 engineering students have been trained toward a 100,000 target, up from an earlier 85,000 goal, and flagged India's expanded Semicon 2.0 outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore ($13.5 billion) approved by the Cabinet on 15 July 2026. With Micron, Kaynes, and CG Semi already in commercial production and India joining the US-led Pax Silica coalition, the government is positioning the country as a full-stack semiconductor powerhouse from design to manufacturing.
