India's passenger vehicle market posted its strongest August in history, with domestic PV sales climbing 36.5% year-on-year to 4,39,309 units in August 2026, up from 3,21,901 units in August 2025, according to SIAM data reported by The Hindu and corroborated by ET Now and Punjab Kesari.

Utility vehicles were the standout performer, with UV sales jumping 39.2% YoY to 2,50,084 units. Cumulative April-August 2026 UV sales grew 30.7% to 13,62,527 units, accounting for over two-thirds of total PV sales of 20,44,696 units in the five-month period.

Two-wheeler sales also posted double-digit growth, rising 10.5% YoY to 20,34,698 units. Scooters led the charge with 23.8% growth to 8,55,715 units, while motorcycles grew 2.4% to 11,33,047 units, per ET Now and Punjab Kesari.

Total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles in August 2026 stood at 31,57,822 units. SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon cited a lower base from the previous year, strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions, and accelerating alternative-drivetrain adoption supporting demand.
