Kya hua
India ko EU se FTA ke tehat 694,853 tonne ka extra preferential steel quota mila hai, jisse WTO wale 946,616 tonne ke saath milakar kul duty-free access 1.64 million tonne salana ho gaya hai.
India ko EU ke saath naye free trade agreement me har saal 1.64 million tonne steel bina extra duty ke bhejne ka quota mila hai — isme 694,853 tonne ka naya preferential quota aur pehle se chala aa raha 946,616 tonne ka WTO quota dono shamil hain.
Yeh combined quota 2025 me EU ko gaye 2.4 million tonne steel export ka 68.4% cover karta hai, jo pehle sirf 39.4% tha. Sabse bada hissa hot-rolled sheets aur strips ko mila hai — 509,605 tonne — jyadatar flat-steel products me.
Lekin yeh preferential access EU ke Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism se exemption nahi deta. Global Trade Research Initiative ka estimate hai ki CBAM fully lagne par shipment value ka lagbhag 35% tak extra cost aa sakta hai, jo tariff bachane ka fayda kaafi kam kar dega.
1.64 million tonne se zyada bheje gaye steel par abhi bhi EU ka 50% tariff lagega, aur yeh extra quota tabhi shuru hoga jab FTA lagu hoga — umeed hai 2026 end tak — product coverage aur rules of origin ke saath.
Yeh quota kyun important hai
EU India ka doosra sabse bada steel export market hai. Duty-free access 0.94M se 1.64M tonne hone se 50% tariff ka risk kam hota hai aur mills ko predictable access milta hai, par CBAM ka carbon price abhi bhi pressure banaye rakhta hai. Legal text 11 September 2026 ko aaya tha aur lagu hone se pehle badal bhi sakta hai.
Kya confirmed hai
Confirmed: 694,853 tonne naya quota, kul 1.64M tonne, quota ke upar 50% tariff, CBAM se koi exemption nahi. Reuters wire ke through GTRI ke FTA text analysis par based.
- Naya preferential quota: 694,853 tonne
- Kul access: 1.64M tonne se 2025 exports ka 68.4% cover
- CBAM abhi bhi lagega — ~35% cost ka estimate — technical dialogue ka vaada hai
Aage kya dekhna hai
FTA kab lagu hota hai (2026 end tak umeed), final product coverage aur rules of origin, aur EU ke saath technical dialogue se CBAM par kuch rahat milti hai ya nahi — ispar nazar rahegi. Hot-rolled aur flat-steel ka allocation tay karega kaunsi mills ko pehle fayda milega.
Kyun matter karta hai
Mills ab EU ko kaafi zyada steel bina 50% tariff ke bhej sakengi, par GTRI ke hisaab se CBAM se ~35% carbon cost abhi bhi lagega, to bachat poori nahi hai.

FTA se trade khulne ka signal hai, par carbon levy bane rehne se future exports me compliance cost badhna tay hai.
Seedhi baat
Quota bada, par carbon ka toll abhi bhi dena padega.
India ka EU steel quota 1.64M tonne hua, par ~35% carbon levy abhi bhi — bada quota, wahi toll.

9 claimsIndia will be able to export up to 1.64 million metric tons of steel a year to the EU under the free trade agreement.
The agreement provides India with an additional preferential steel quota of 694,853 tons, on top of an existing 946,616-ton WTO quota.
The combined 1.64 million ton quota equals about 68.4% of India's 2.4 million ton steel exports to the EU in 2025, up from 39.4% under the existing quota alone.
The preferential quota does not exempt Indian steel from the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which applies to all steel imports.
Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) estimates CBAM costs could average around 35% of shipment value once fully phased in.
Steel shipments above the combined quota will be subject to the EU's 50% tariff.
Most of India's new preferential quota is allocated to flat-steel products, with hot-rolled sheets and strips receiving the largest single allocation of 509,605 tons.
The GTRI analysis is based on the legal text of the FTA released on Friday, 11 September 2026, and the text could still be revised.
The additional quota will become available only once the India-EU FTA enters into force, expected by year end 2026, and will remain subject to product coverage, rules of origin and quota availability.
