iOS 27's New Siri AI Is Finally Useful — And I Can't Stop Using It

Apple's iOS 27 brings a dedicated Siri app, on-device and cloud AFM 3 models from Gemini tech, and multi-step smarts that have a longtime skeptic actually choosing Siri over ChatGPT.

01 / What happened

What happened

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026 with a rebuilt Siri AI that lives in its own app, syncs chats via iCloud, and handles multi-step requests using files, messages and on-screen context.

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026 alongside watchOS 27, iPadOS 27 and visionOS 27, and this time Siri is the main event. TechCrunch reviewer Ivan Mehta, who tested iOS 27 on his main phone through the public beta and a second device on the developer beta, said he had barely used Siri for years except to set timers. With iOS 27, that changed — he now turns to Siri for complex requests and on-screen context instead of defaulting to ChatGPT or Gemini.

The biggest change is a dedicated Siri app with iCloud-synced conversation history and much smarter context awareness. Siri can now handle multi-step tasks like finding hidden iOS features and adding them to a note, and it pulls context directly from your files, messages and email. Siri is also available inside the Camera app, where it correctly identified a drink as Aam Panna from the camera image, and you can customize Siri's voice, expressiveness and pace in Settings with live practice samples.

Under the hood, Siri AI runs on Apple's new Foundation Models AFM 3, which were developed from technologies behind Google's Gemini models — though Apple says it does not use Google infrastructure to power Siri interactions. The lineup includes AFM 3 Core with 3 billion parameters on-device, AFM 3 Core Advanced with 20 billion parameters using a sparse architecture that activates 1-4B at a time, plus AFM 3 Cloud, ADM 3 Cloud for image tasks and AFM3 Cloud Pro on remote servers. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air get an even more powerful on-device model for customizable voices and better dictation.

iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 or later and iPhone SE 2nd gen or later, but Siri AI needs newer hardware: iPhone 15 Pro or later, iPhone 16 or later, iPad Pro or Air with M1 or newer, or iPad mini with A17 Pro. At launch Siri AI is in beta for English-only devices, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish coming in October, and it will not be available in the EU on iPhone or iPad or in China. iOS 27 also adds a Liquid Glass transparency slider, a cross-app clipboard with origin labels, intelligent Wi-Fi to mobile data switching, vibe-coded Shortcuts and Safari extensions from natural language prompts, auto password changing in the Passwords app, and new child-safety controls.

“For years, I barely used Siri for anything beyond menial tasks like setting timers or alarms. That has changed with iOS 27, as I now go back to Siri for complex requests and to make sense of on-screen context again and again.”

Ivan Mehta TechCrunchother

“I have really enjoyed using the new Siri, often trying to find new use cases for it — and that's possibly the biggest win for Apple, given that I, like many people, had given up on Siri before this update.”
